Paper Marbling

A Colorful Afternoon with Creativity at the Saint Rachel Center

On the 12th of November a group of children of the Saint Rachel Center aged 6+ gathered to participate in an applied Paper Marbling Art Workshop organized by a volunteer, Canan Arıkan, a Turkish amateur artist and a visiting research fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Paper marbling art to decorate papers for calligraphy and book binding was widely popular in the East but also in the Western Culture, already from the Medieval ages. Its method consists basically in transferring the color drops that are floating on the surface of a liquid to the paper. After a brief instruction of the basic “how to” of the techniques, our children already started to produce their own artworks along with a lot of fun. The success could be easily told from the children’ eyes full of happiness and amazement. The workshop contributed not only to their individual creativity, but it was also a great opportunity for them to feel the team-work spirit while working in collaboration.

Canan, thank you very much for the time and the friendship you shared with us.
