Sukkot Meeting in the Jaffa Community 2026

On the occasion of the Feast of Sukkot, the Jaffa Community welcomed Rabbi Oded from Jerusalem to the sukkah erected in the monastery courtyard. Community members gathered to learn more about the meaning of this important Jewish feast and to share an evening of fellowship and dialogue.

During his presentation, Rabbi Oded explained the various dimensions of Sukkot in Jewish tradition. Celebrated during the harvest season and in anticipation of the coming rains, the feast invites people to leave the security of their homes and dwell in temporary shelters. This practice serves as a reminder that all blessings come from God and that gratitude should accompany times of abundance.

The rabbi also spoke about the special joy associated with Sukkot, particularly during the time of the Temple in Jerusalem, when the feast was accompanied by the Water Libation ceremony. Water occupies a central place in the symbolism of the feast as a sign of life, blessing, and hope.

In this context, participants reflected on the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John: “On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink’” (John 7:37). The connection between Sukkot, water, and spiritual thirst offers a deeper appreciation of the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.

The universal dimension of Sukkot was also highlighted. Jewish tradition associates the feast with prayer for all nations, a theme reflected both in the sacrifices offered on behalf of the peoples of the world and in the prophecy of Zechariah, which envisions all nations coming to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Sukkot.

The evening concluded with a shared meal in a warm and joyful atmosphere. The gathering was a beautiful opportunity to strengthen friendship, mutual understanding, and the common hope for peace among all peoples.

We thank Rabbi Oded for his inspiring presentation, Fr. Apolinary for organizing the meeting, and all the members of the community who helped prepare the meal and contributed to this meaningful evening.
