Spiritual Retreat of the Priests of St. James Vicariate

This year the priests of St. James Vicariate did their annual spiritual retreat together not in Israel, but in another region of the Latin Patriarchate - Cyprus. From the 19th to the 23rd of September, they gathered in the Village of Cypriot Journalists, Pervolia, close to Larnaca under the guidance of Fr. Jerzy Kraj, OFM, the Patriarchal Vicar for Cyprus, in the last days of his office.

The focus of the retreat were the figures of Barnabas, Paul and John Mark: the three figures, who on the island of Cyprus went through significant experiences as it told in the book of Acts of the Apostoles. In addition to the story of the New Testament, Father Jerzy based himself on the speeches of Popes Benedict and Francis during their visits to the island.

Two special virtues were mentioned about Barnabas that should accompany us as spiritual guides and community shepherds: patience (Barnabas' ability to give additional opportunities, to wait for the time and the people to be ready, to help to reconcile), and spiritual friendship (his missionary success stems from the close and deep relationship with Saul).

The last lecture focused mainly on John Mark, the one who, according to tradition, wrote the Gospel according to Mark. It was pointed out how one can progress on the path of salvation even through personal weaknesses, conflicts and disputes.

During the retreat, the priests had personal conversations with the Vicar of St. James and on the last day all the priests met together to plan the new pastoral year.

In Cyprus we saw how ecumenism can be a way of life. The help between the churches (Orthodox, Catholic and Anglican) is a normal, daily routine there. Often one congregation uses the other's church in order to provide the believers with the worship they deserve.

During our free time, we visited several places, but the most amazing was the northern part under Turkish occupation, where the tomb of the Apostle Barnabas is also located, and Larnaca - a beautiful city full of culture, with the tomb of Lazarus.
