Interreligious Meeting in Sukkat Shalom 2026

This year's discussion focused on the theme "Leadership for Peace in Our Traditions." Participants reflected on examples of leadership drawn from their respective religious traditions and explored how faith communities can contribute to peace in society.

The Jewish presentation began with the figure of Aaron, whom the Mishnah describes as one who "loved peace and pursued peace, loved people and brought them closer to the Torah." Other biblical examples were also discussed, including Abraham, who sought to prevent conflicts, Joseph, who promoted reconciliation, and Moses, remembered for his humility.

Representing the Christian tradition, Fr. Roman reflected on two Gospel passages in which the disciples argue about who is the greatest and seek places of honor beside Jesus. He noted that the context of both stories is marked by disagreement and tension among the disciples themselves. Those who wish to be leaders for peace, he said, must first learn to respect one another, love one another, and speak well of others.

Drawing on Jesus' response to these disputes, Fr. Roman highlighted three characteristics of leadership for peace. Leaders should give special attention to the weakest members of society, including children, the sick, and the elderly. They should be ready to accept sacrifice when necessary, recognizing that peace often requires perseverance and personal cost. Finally, they should remember that leadership is fundamentally a form of service: leaders are servants of the community, and believers are servants of God.

The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, with many participants contributing their reflections and concerns regarding the need for leadership that promotes peace, reconciliation, and mutual respect. The gathering once again demonstrated the importance of interreligious friendship and dialogue as a witness to hope in our society.
