Yom Kippur Retreat in Silence and Fasting

The tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. It is dedicated to repentance, prayer, and seeking forgiveness. Across Israel, daily life comes to an almost complete stop. Businesses close, public transportation ceases, roads become empty, and a profound atmosphere of silence settles over the country. While many people spend the day in synagogues, children often fill the streets and cycle along roads that are normally crowded with traffic.

Inspired by the spirit of this sacred day, members of the St. James Vicariate chose to dedicate the time to a retreat of silence and prayer. Fr. Piotr accompanied the participants through a series of spiritual meditations, inviting them to step away from the noise and distractions of everyday life and to listen more attentively to the voice of God. The Sisters joined the group for the celebration of the Eucharist, making this gathering a beautiful moment of communion and reflection.

The retreat unfolded at a peaceful pace, allowing participants to enter more deeply into prayer, fasting, and personal examination of conscience. In a world often marked by constant activity and endless demands, the stillness of Yom Kippur offers a unique opportunity to rediscover what is essential.

For Christians as well, this day can become a special invitation to seek the Lord. When an entire country pauses, there is little excuse not to dedicate time to God. Reading the Scriptures, praying, reflecting on one's life, or making an examination of conscience are simple yet powerful ways to use these precious hours.
