Lent Retreat 2024

On Saturday, (March 9, 2024), approximately one hundred individuals convened at the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu, in Jerusalem, for a day themed "The Experience in the Desert." This event was a spiritual gathering for prayer and fellowship among diverse communities.

The day commenced with Fr. Benny elucidating that traditionally, the Jerusalem community—and more recently, Jaffa—observed a day of reflection during the 40-day Lent period. However, this year marked a change as all Hebrew and Russian-speaking communities were invited to participate.

The day unfolded bilingually in Hebrew and Russian, fostering a sense of unity in shared faith. After the inaugural prayer, attendees engaged in introspection. They received materials in both languages, delving into the Israelites’ desert trials, with prompts to open one’s heart to God and trust in His omnipotence. Some dedicated their private moments to prayer before the Eucharist, while others sought solitude among nature or recited the rosary.

The Lord’s Supper was a highlight, where hymns of devotion to God resonated in both Hebrew and Russian. Following the Mass, a sumptuous meal was served, leading to group discussions. Participants chose from various activities, including a debrief with Fr. Benny, spiritual readings with Fr. Apolinary, or the Way of the Cross—conducted in Russian through the Old City or in Hebrew within the premises of Gallicantu.

The day concluded with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude towards Jesus, reinforcing community bonds and a collective return to faith.
