Holot must be closed
The Israeli Supreme Court has ordered that Holot, the facility for African asylum seekers in the Negev be closed.
In an important decision taken on Monday, September 22, 2014, the Israeli Supreme Court decided that Holot must be closed within three months and the residents freed. Furthermore it declared that it was forbidden to imprison asylum seekers for up to one year without trial.
Likewise the Supreme Court disqualified the law dealing with “infiltrators”. This is a victory for the human rights’ organizations that have been fighting for the dignity of the asylum seekers in Israel.
According to the statistics published by the Population and Migration Authority, there are about 47 000 asylum seekers in Israel, most of them (35 000) Eritreans and about 9 000 Sudanese.
