The Forum of Interfaith Leaders in Israel Visits Majdal Sham

On Tuesday (30.07), a group of Druze, Jews, Muslims and Christians belonging to The Forum of Interfaith Leaders in Israel, went to Majdal Shams, a Druze village near the border with Lebanon and Syria, where 12 children were killed by a missile that fell on the playground. Fr. Roman reports about the encounter.

In a solemn visit to Majdal Shams, our hearts were touched by the profound spirit of community and resilience. The journey began with a tribute to the lives lost, a wreath of flowers placed on the football field, marking the site of the tragedy. Our path led us to the homes of the bereaved, where condolences were shared, and a collective mourning was felt. The day concluded with a gathering of village leaders, a moment to reflect on the tragedy, share impressions of the visit, and offer prayers for peace and healing.

The most striking aspect of this visit was the remarkable grace of the Druze community. Despite the sorrow, there was a palpable sense of peace and kindness emanating from everyone we met. Their philosophy of life, which views earthly events, including the most tragic, as part of a destined journey, was both humbling and enlightening. In their presence, discussions of faith took on a new dimension, transcending doctrines and focusing on the essence of humanity. This encounter was not just a meeting of different faiths but a profound experience of human connection, a testament to the universal values of kindness and solidarity. I extend my deepest gratitude for this experience and pray that the spirit of unity and compassion continues to inspire and comfort all who seek solace and love.

After the attack on Majdal Shams the Association of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land (of which also the Vicar of St. James is a member) issued the following message of condolences:

12 children were tragically killed in a playground attack in Majdal Shams on Saturday. These innocent lives, full of hopes and dreams, were taken in an unspeakable act of violence, deeply grieving all who hold life sacred.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and to the entire Druze community in the Holy Land. The loss of these children is an unspeakable tragedy, leaving a profound impact on us all. Words cannot fully express the grief and indignation we feel in the face of such an abhorrent act of violence.

In this time of mourning, we must honor their memories by renewing our commitment to peace and rejecting all forms of violence. The cycle of violence must end. We urge all parties to seek understanding and mutual respect, for the future of our children and communities depends on it. Enough with this violence, hatred, and contempt!

We earnestly entreat all parties to abandon the path of conflict and arms, and to seek understanding and mutual respect. The future of children and the welfare of our communities hinge upon our ability to transcend hatred and to embrace the principles of compassion and coexistence. Nothing will be resolved by the evil of arms and war! Let us not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good! [Rom 12:21].

May the Lord grant comfort and strength to the families of the victims, and may their memories remind us of the preciousness of life and the urgent need for peace.
