Jesus and the Samaritan woman

God is attentive to the cry of our prayer.

This seems to be the message of our first reading today. The people, wondering in the wilderness cries out, because of its thirst. God listens to their voice and gives them water.

God is still attentive even when we do not cry or pray.

This seems to be the message of our second reading today. Christ died for us when we were still powerless, when we were ungodly. And this not because of our merits or of our prayers, but just because of his infinite love and mercy on his creatures.

God knows the deepest needs of our souls.

He is aware of what he has to give or to give not, because he knows us better than we know ourselves. This is today’s Gospel: “If you only knew the gift of God…” God knows that we know so little, that we understand so little and yet He still loves us and waits for us, He asks us for a glass of water.

We Christians have received the full revelation of God in Jesus Christ, but can we say about ourselves that we understand God fully? We cannot. And this seems not to be an obstacle to our God. He rather says: just believe, with the thing you call faith, in me, as you can understand me. This is enough for me to enter into your heart and become active in you life. Just believe! Don’t close yourself in self-sufficiency, you will suffer. Don’t close yourself in your negative thoughts or emotions… you will dry up like a tree in the desert. Don’t think you can manage life. Because you will bitterly find out that you can’t. Trust me. Trust and walk!

Are we attentive to God’s prayer?

We forget that God is praying to us all the time. And that too often we make ourselves deaf to his voice. Now, in this very moment and in this very circumstances which we may like or may not, God is trying to speak to us and to say something. How can we listen to Him?

Let us stop, in any case we will have to stop! Let us rid of the charge of thoughts, fears, questions, inquietudes… let us shut them up, and try to hear the voice of God, who is leading us in this wilderness. He has water to offer, if we really want to drink. God, give us this water, that we may not thirst!
