On Saturday, December 20, 2008, a retreat day organized by the Jerusalem community was held on the beautiful grounds of the convent of the Sisters of Sion in Ein Karem. About 40 members from the communities of Jerusalem, Jaffa and Beer Sheba attended the day that began at 9.30. In a warm and friendly atmosphere, the day began with morning prayer. Viviane Cerquiera, a member of the Catholic charismatic community from Brazil, “Shalom”, renewed her commitment during the Saturday evening mass (6.12.2008) in the Hebrew speaking Catholic community in Haifa.

Members of the Jerusalem kehilla with their priest, Father Apolinary, celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles with a proper sukkah, set up in the courtyard of the Jerusalem community home.

13 members of the Haifa kehilla spent three nights in retreat in the beautiful retreat center of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition, at the shrine of Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant in Kiryat Yearim, overlooking Abu Ghosh. The days were spent in prayer and in study and some fasted over Yom Kippur.

One year ago, on August 5, 2007, Jean-Marie Lustiger, Cardinal Archbishop of Paris, died. A great friend of the Hebrew speaking Catholic communities in Israel, he is remembered by many for his contribution to the life of the Church and especially for his untiring work to improve Jewish-Christian relations. Rivka Karplus, a member of the Jerusalem kehilla, attended the memorial mass in the Benedictine monastery in Abu Ghosh and sent us this report.

On Saturday evening, June 7, 2008, Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Vicar for the Hebrew-speaking Catholic communities in Israel, paid his annual visit to the Hebrew-speaking community in Haifa. He was welcomed there by the community which filled the chapel.
