Returning home: memories of a migrant worker

Flor, a Filipina care giver, lived in Israel for eight years. She was a pillar of the Filipino community in Jerusalem, fully committed to the Church and served as the coordinator of the Saint Lorenzo Ruiz community. She returned home for good in March, 2014.

I have been in Israel since October 2006. As a care giver, my goal is one I shared with the majority of us, Filipino migrants, which is to augment our meager family income. Slowly along the way I have experienced how God touched my life. He brought me to the San Lorenzo Ruiz Community (one of the Filipino Catholic communities in Jerusalem), where I served for several years. Serving the Lord through this community was a fulfilling task. I learned many things that really molded me as a good Christian.

It was a wonderful experience to be a care giver in the Holy Land. I have learned the culture of the Jewish people, their beliefs and adjusted to their way of life and their tradition. Indulging in their good food was one of them. I have met different kinds of people from different walks of life; priests, sisters, deacons, brothers and the faithful.

I will never forget being there and thus able to see the beautiful Biblical places in Israel. I really thank the people whom I interfaced with and most importantly, I thank God for the opportunity. I may travel to other places in the future, but surely I will cherish and treasure my time in Israel for the rest of my life.
