Father Michael McGarry returns to the USA

Father Michael McGarry, directed the Tantur Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies in Jerusalem for past 11 years. He was recently elected to head the religious congregation of the Paulist Fathers and is returning to the United States.

Father McGarry, who even before he arrived in Israel was a well known activist in the field of Jewish-Catholic relations, also served as secretary of the Commission for Relations between the Jewish People and the Catholic Church of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. In Israel he continued to contribute much to the improvement of relations between Jews and Catholics and made both Israeli Jews and Palestinians welcome in Tantur.

He is succeeded as director of Tantur by Father Timothy Lowe, an Orthodox priest from the Orthodox Church of America, a married man and father of children, who speaks both Hebrew and Arabic. We wish him every success in his new job.
