Father Giuseppe: For the second Sunday of Advent

Father Giuseppe of Koinonia John the Baptist reminds us to stir our desire for God's Word during the Advent season.

The Gospel of this Sunday (Luke 3:1-6) meticulously describes for us the political and religious context of Israel at the moment when the Word of God "fell" on John the Baptist. The Gospel writer emphasizes the importance and the transcendence of what happened to Jesus’ cousin in the wilderness. John, far away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds, in the silence, encountered and was captured by the Word and from that moment he was never the same again… his ministry had begun.

The same applies to us if we want to reawaken the desire for the Lord who is to come, we need to encounter his Word; it is the Word itself that creates this desire in us as it also reveals the Lord’s promises for us. If you do not know that the “promises of peace and not of misfortune” (Jeremiah 29:11) are for you, your waiting and desire is weak. We read in the psalm: “When…, we seemed to be dreaming”. When the Lord makes things happen, this “dream” becomes reality. Let’s begin to dream, by contemplating His promises and remember that this is the best time to start again!
