Father Giuseppe of the community Koinonia John the Baptist sent us a third reflection for the Sundays of Advent.
John the Baptist is asked only one question: “What must we do?” (Luke 3:10). It is the crowd (the people), the publicans (tax collectors) and the soldiers who want an answer. They are all waiting for the answer as to what they should do.

John, in reply to this “simple” question, says that they should not count on their privileged position… rather he exhorts them to be honest and to share. This is his message of evangelization! He trains the people that they should not depend on their riches and on their social position, it is no longer the time for these things; now they must learn to depend on the Lord.
It is a real spiritual exercise: abandon oneself with complete trust in Him. Only in this way can we too understand the Pauline exhortation: “Do not be anxious about anything…” (Philippians 4:6). This verb is also found in the parable of the Sower, where the sown Word becomes suffocated by distresses, worries, concerns. Moreover Jesus says: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed" (Luke 10:41-42).
Therefore this is what we must do: learn to depend on Him who is coming. |
