Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas – January 28

The Church remembers Thomas Aquinas, one of the greatest thinkers and theologians of the Middle Ages, on January 28.

stthomasThomas was born in 1225 in Lazio (Roccasecca), Italy to a noble family. In 1244, after much opposition from his family, he entered the Dominican order, an order that emphasizes studies and whose members excel at preaching. He studied in Paris and began to write books that greatly influenced the development of Catholic theology until this very day. Thomas was familiar with the works of the Muslim and Jewish philosophers of his time, including also Rambam (Rabbi Moses son of Maimon, one of the greatest Jewish philosophers of the Middle Ages). The theological system he developed dominated Catholic theology until the 1960s.

Thomas died in 1274 and was canonized in 1323. He is the patron saint of seminarians, students and universities.

 Prayer of Saint Thomas Aquinas

“Grant me, O Lord my God,

a mind to know you,

a heart to seek you,

wisdom to find you,

conduct pleasing to you,

faithful perseverance in waiting for you,

and a hope of finally embracing you."

Amen.
