Yom HaShoah in the Vicariate

On the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day, Sunday, April 27, 2014, the kehillot united their prayers with the people of Israel in memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Shoah.

Particularly significant this year was the fact that Popes John XXIII and Pope John Paul II were canonized on this very day. Both Popes are credited with saving Jews during the Shoah.

On the eve of the Yom HaShoah, Father David, Latin Patriarchal Vicar responsible for the Hebrew Speaking Catholics in Israel, accompanied Msgr. Matteo de Mori, Counselor of the Apostolic Nuncio to Israel, to the official ceremony at Yad VaShem. The ceremony this year underlined the 70th anniversary since the extermination of Hungarian Jews. The theme was defined as “Between extermination and liberation”. President Peres, Prime Minister Netanyahu and many other dignitaries were present. Among them were also representatives of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Patriarchates.

The interviews with those who lit the memorial torches can be viewed here
