Van der Lugt, a 75 year old Dutch Jesuit who spent decades in Syria, was a priest and a psychotherapist. This proved to be immensely useful when it came to building bridges of peace and mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims. He chose to remain in the besieged city of Homs, sharing the fate of the civilians who were trapped there and attempting to ease their suffering.

We mourn this brave apostle of Christ!
