Francois Deniau served as Bishop of Nevers between 1998 and 2011. From 2000 to 2005, he was president of the commission of the French Bishops’ Conference for relations with the Jewish people.

Born in 1936 in the region of Paris, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1961. He later served many years as a chaplain to students and a responsible for the formation of young priests. He was also involved in the development of the preparation of young couples for marriage.

In 1998, he was named Bishop of Nevers by Pope John Paul II.

He loved the Holy Land and the Jewish people and had planned to spend a longer period of time in Jerusalem after his retirement in 2011. Unfortunately, he fell ill and was not able to realize this dream but remained in contact with many of his Jewish and Catholic friends until his death.

May his memory be a source of blessing!
