He was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He made his first vows as a Jesuit on March 12, 1960.
He was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969.
He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires on May 20, 1992 and was ordained a bishop on June 27, 1992.
He became Archbishop of Buenos Aires on February 28, 1998.
He was elevated to Cardinal on February 21, 2001.
He was elected Pope on March 13, 2013.
