A few days before the Jewish New Year, the members of the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land and its Committee for Relations with the Jewish People, sent greetings to the State President, the Prime Minister, ministers, mayors, the Chief Rabbis and other rabbis and public figures. The text that was sent read:

Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good?

Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.

Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.

(Ps 34:11-15)

We wish you and all our Jewish brothers and sisters a blessed New Year of 5774. At this time, you are engaged in prayers for repentance, revival and renewal and we join our prayers to yours for this country, our troubled region and our world.

In the New Year we must work together with even more commitment, courage and insistence for justice and peace, for pardon and reconciliation, for all that can be described as "tikkun olam" in this land and throughout the world.
