Messianic Jewish panel at World Congress of Jewish Studies

At the 16th World Congress of Jewish Studies, held at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem from July 28 until August 1, 2013, there was also a panel on Messianic Jews.

This is the first time an entire panel has dealt with the phenomenon of Jewish believers in Jesus at this renowned scholarly gathering. The panel took place on July 29, 2013 and the chairman of the panel was renown Hebrew University professor of early Christianity, Serge Ruzer.

The four presentations were:

- "New Voices": The Russian Contribution to Messianic Jewish Theology in Israel by Hanna Rucks,

- A Jewish Church: The Debate over the Establishment of a Hebrew Christian Denomination between the World Wars by Gershon Nerel,

- The Conversion of Non-Jews to Messianic Judaism: A Test Case for Membership and Identity in a New Religious Movement by Richard S Harvey,

- Walking Together, Walking Apart: Evangelical Christianity and Messianic Judaism by Yaakov Ariel

The fact that the panel was included on the agenda shows, according to Richard Harvey that “Messianic Jewish Studies, or studies of Jewish believers in Yeshua, is firmly on the agenda in the academic world as a branch of Jewish studies.”
