Pope in Brazil


Pope Francis is in Brazil for the World Youth Day and continues proclaiming the Gospel to one and all.

We publish here a series of video clips that follow the steps of Pope Francis on his visit to Brazil.

- On July 24, 2013, Pope Francis celebrated his first World Youth Day Mass, at the Marian Shrine of Aparecida. In his homily, he called on Christians to embrace a positive life, based on hopefulness, openness to God and joy.

- That same evening, Pope Francis visited a Brazilian hospital that helps recovering drug addicts in the city of Rio. After greeting the crowds outside the St. Francis of Assisi hospital, the Pope gave a speech where he denounced drug-trafficking and the so called 'dealers of death.' He also reminded those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction that there is hope, adding that the Church will not abandon them.

- On July 25, 2013, during his visit to a Brazilian slum, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of generosity, even amid limited resources. The Pope called on the community, specifically the youth, to not be indifferent to corruption or injustices.

- On July 25, 2013, after his arrival at the official WYD Welcoming Ceremony in Copacabana, Pope Francis was welcomed on the especially built stage by the Archbishop of Rio, João Orani Tempesta. After the opening ceremony, the Pope gave a speech in which he thanked everyone for the warm welcome he received, but also his predecessor, Benedict XVI, for having summoned the meeting. The Pope also encouraged the youths to put their trust in Christ, and to make Him the center of their lives.

- On July 26, 2013, before thousands of people, Pope Francis led the Angelus prayer in Rio. From the central balcony of the St. Joaquim Archbishops Palace, the Pope talked about the need to strengthen the bond between the youth and the elderly. Since July 26th marks the feast day of Jesus' grandparents, Saints Joachim and Anne, the Pope reflected on the importance of the family, specifically the relationship between the young and the old. He added that in a home filled with love and faith, Mary was able to listen to the Lord.

- On July 26, 2013, the Pope participated in the Way of the Cross ceremony. In an artistic setting, with warm colors and moving moments, 13 stations were led by pilgrims from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Germany and the U.S. On the 14th station they arrived to the main stage, where they met with Pope Francis. During his speech, he said, the Cross, means much more than what meets the eye.
