HaAretz: Christian ascetics for Yom Kippur


Again this year, HaAretz newspaper has published a supplement for Yom Kippur that has a number of articles about Christian ascetic practice.

On Yom Kippur, many secular Jews have time to read and HaAretz newspaper has again published a supplement for the holy day that is full of fascinating articles connected to the themes of the day. Once again this year, the supplement includes a number of articles on Christianity, focusing on ascetic life.

1. Aviad Kleinberg, renowned scholar from Tel Aviv University, has published an article that compares Jewish and Christian ascetic practice and examines some of the excesses in the Christian ascetic tradition. Read here

2. Another article examines the narratives of prostitutes who repented and became great saints, narratives that exist in Judaism but are even more popular in ancient Christianity, like the story of Saint Mary the Egyptian. Read here

3. Another article surveys the life of Stylites, ascetes who lived atpo pillars. Read here
