Outpouring of solidarity with monks of Latroun

Many Jewish Israelis have been making their way to Latroun in order to express solidarity with the monks after the burning of a door in the monastery and the spraying of anti-Christian graffiti on the walls.

Yesterday, September 5, 2012, many Israeli Jews made their way to Latroun in order to express solidarity with the Trappist monks after the attack against the monastery. Among them were also rabbis from various movements – Reform, Conservative and Orthodox.

In the evening, the monks hosted an event in the garden of the monastery for about one hundred people who had come to protest the violence and vandalism. The events was titled "Light not Terror" and their were Reform, Conservative and Orthodox rabbis who attended. Orthodox Rabbi Benny Lau said: "The religion of Israel can notr bear such a disgrace. It is a desecration of the divine Name and a desecration of the name of Israel. It is contempt for both human beings on earth and for God".

Member of Knesset Daniel Ben Simon commented that he could not understand how the police had not arrested anybody: "Where is all the strength and wisdom of the security forces in the country in order to catch the tens of individual young men ands women who are making our lives so crazy?"

The monks received the visitors with gratitude.
