New year for religion classes in Tel Aviv

On Saturday, September 1, 2012, religion classes for Filipino children began again at the Divine Mercy Chapel in Tel Aviv.

For the third year, a team from the Saint James Vicariate for Hebrew speaking Catholics, is collaborating with the Filipino chaplaincy in Israel in order to teach the children of the Filipino community catechism in Hebrew. The Divine Mercy Chapel is on Levanda Street in south Tel Aviv. The children who are studying catechism are the children of migrant workers from the Philippines who are born in Israel and are being educated in the Israeli education system. The children are Hebrew speakers and most are unable to study in the language of their parents.

This year, Father David, the head of the team, is assisted by Benedetto and Kirill from the Jerusalem Vicariate community. About 35 children came to the first class and Father David explained that the intention this year was to divide the children into three groups:

- the older children would be preparing to receiving the sacrament of confirmation

- the children who had received first communion last June would deepen their knowledge of the history of salvation

- the new children would begin preparation to receive first communion next June.

On this occasion, the Hebrew language mass with the children, celebrated after the religion class was also renewed.
