Remembering the Shoah in our kehillot

January 27 is International Holocaust Memorial Day and Brother Alberto Pari OFM, assistant to Father Apolinary in the Jaffa kehilla was interviewed by Vatican Radio.

He explained to the Radio’s listeners that among our parishioners are “many children and grandchildren of those deported and those who died in the concentration camps. This theme is very much present as we hear in their stories and their memories, stories that are often interwoven with other stories of being saved and of friendship with non-Jewish families, of many places where, during the Nazi period they were hidden or helped in fleeing the arrests, thus saving their lives. Remembering and expressing gratitude which sometimes becomes recognition in the form of the title “Just among the Nations”, which Israel bestows on those who saved Jewish lives during the Shoah.”

Brother Alberto added; “It is painful to note that some might deny the Holocaust even today… It is necessary to remember so that this kind of things do not repeat themselves. These days should educate and form the younger generations also by means of the voices of the direct witnesses.”
