New bishop for Latin Patriarchate in Amman


Today, January 19, 2012, the Holy Father announced the appointment of the new Latin Patriarchal Vicar in Amman to succeed Bishop Salim Sayegh, who has passed the canonical age of retirement. The new bishop is H.E. Maroun Lahham. Mabrouk, Sayyidna!

The new Latin Patriarchal Vicar in Amman, Maroun Lahham, has been serving since 2005 as Bishop of the diocese of Tunis in Tunisia and in 2010 was elevated to the rank of Archbishop. Sayyidna Maroun returns to his home diocese, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, where he had served in many different roles before being sent to Tunis.

Maroun Lahham was born in July 1948 to a family of Palestinian refugees in Jordan. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1972. He served in a number of parishes in Jordan and also in Dubai. After receiving a PhD in Catechetics in Rome, he was appointed rector of the Patriarchal Seminary in Beit Jala in 1994 and served there as rector until 2005, when he was appointed bishop in Tunisia.
