Lecture on the Latin Patriarchate at Van Leer Institute

On Thursday, September 11, 2014, Father David Neuhaus, Latin Patriarchal Vivar responsible for the Hebrew speaking Catholics and migrants in Israel, gave a public lecture at the Van Leer Institute in West Jerusalem.

The evening began with a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the September 11 bombings in New York. The lecture was titled: “The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem: How it sees the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? What is its role as a peacemaker?” The well attended lecture focused on the development of the Latin Patriarchate’s vision of Israel and Palestine from the time of the Second Vatican Council. It particular focused on the role of Patriarch Michel Sabbah, first local born Patriarch. The lecture concluded with an appraisal of the present day role of the Latin Patriarchate, the importance of its institutions and its vocation to speak a language of justice, peace, reconciliation and unity in a situation of conflict.

The respondent to the lecture was Dr. Merav Mack from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who stressed the important role the Holy See can play in the region.

After the lecture there was a time for questions and answers from the audience.
