Special meeting in Santiago on the third day

Father Apolinary sent us a report of a special meeting that took place today, August 12, in Santiago di Compostella.

“This morning, like all mornings up till now, we prayed together with the Spanish students. We prayed and meditated on the text of Acts 2:44-46, asking God that we might know how to continue to live in unity and share our bread in joy after this strong and joyful experience, when we return home.

Today, among the many activities, we had a great and happy surprise. Before lunch, at 13.00, we were received by the Archbishop of Santiago di Compostella, Don Julian Barrio. The visit was stupendous. He was delighted to meet us because we both, the diocese of Santiago and the Saint James Vicariate, are under the patronage of Saint James (not the same one but who is counting…). Secondly, the patron of the diocese and our group are both from the Holy Land.

Of course we sang for him a song in Hebrew. An even greater surprise was when the Archbishop himself took us on a guided tour. We went through the ancient refectory, where Pope Benedict XVI had eaten last November, the throne room, the ball room… We also saw the balloon over the Obradorio Plaza.

In the afternoon we visited the Museum of the Holy Land, under the care of the Franciscans. The superior, Father Paco, spoke about the pilgrims’ route of Saint James. Tomorrow we intend to walk the last 27 kilometers of this route. In the evening we celebrated mass in Spanish and in Hebrew in the Church of Saint Francis.

Now we must go to bed early so as to rise early tomorrow…
