Memorial mass for Archbishop Sambi in Jerusalem

On Saturday evening, August 6, 2011, the Feast of the Transfiguration, the Church of Jerusalem remembered Archbishop Sambi.

Archbishop Pietro Sambi, who died on July 27, was remembered at a solemn mass celebrated in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem by Archbishop Antonio Franco, Nuncio in Israel and Cyprus and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and for the Palestinian Territories. Sambi was Franco’s predecessor and died in the United States, where he was serving as Nuncio.

The mass was concelebrated by Jerusalem Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, who preached at the mass (his homily can be read here). Also concelebrating were Emeritus Patriarch Michel Sabbah, three of the Patriarchal Vicars, Bishop Marcuzzo from Nazareth, Bishop Shomali from Jerusalem and Father David Neuhaus from the Hebrew speaking Saint James Vicariate as well as the Custos of the Holy Land, Father Pizzaballa. With them, there were abbots and priests from the Church of Jerusalem. Greek Catholic Archbishop Yusuf Zreyi was also present.

Sambi was remembered as a man who loved the Holy Land and promoted the Church here.
