South Sudan: a new country

Today, July 9, 2011, is the first day of independence for South Sudan. We pray that this new country might find its way to freedom for all, stability and prosperity.

For many years the region of southern Sudan suffered the ravages of war. This led to hundreds of thousands of south Sudanese to flee their homes, many taking refuge in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, and then moving farther northwards into Egypt. From there, thousands of Sudanese entered Israel. Today there are thousands of Sudanese who are asylum seekers spread throughout Israel, particularly in the cities of the south: Eilat, Arad, Dimona and also in the area of Tel Aviv. Most of these people are Christians.

The Catholic Church has a strong presence in South Sudan. The Church has played an important role in sustaining the people during the war and must now help reconstruct a society that aspires to peace, stability and prosperity. We join in this prayer.
