It has been announced that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has officially accepted the resignation of Cardinal Nasrallah Sfeir, Patriarch for the Maronites. The 91 year old Cardinal has served as head of the Maronite Church since 1986. He has played an important role in the life of the Church in Lebanon and throughout the Middle East as well as in the political and social life of Lebanon.

His resignation comes as the Maronite Church celebrates 1600 years since the birth of the Church’s founder Saint Maroun. Recently a statue of Saint Maroun was unveiled in the Vatican, a homage to the fidelity of the Maronite Christians and the unity of the Church with Rome.
