Fourteen of the new deacons are Salesians and four of them Missionaries of Africa and all are students in the Salesian Theological School at Ratisbonne in Jerusalem. Their countries of origin included Burundi, Malawi, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Zambia, Slovakia, Italy and Ethiopia. A few of them are destined for service in the Holy Land and the others will be sent to other countries throughout the world.

Many of the new deacons have served in the various migrant communities of Filipinos, Indians, Sri Lankans and Ge’ez rite Catholics in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and have helped with the formation of adults and children in these communities. A few have also gotten to know the Arabic and Hebrew speaking communities in the Holy Land. On the day of their ordination, the Basilica was packed with people from all parts of the Church of Jerusalem and together they celebrated a great event for the Universal Church, the commitment of these young men to the service of the Church!
