From Monday, August 18, 2014 until Friday, August 22, 2014, a group of about 40 children enjoyed a summer camp held for the first time in the premises of the Our Lady Woman of Valor in south Tel Aviv. Seven children from the Filipino community in Haifa and three Filipino children and one Ethiopian child from Jerusalem joined between twenty five and thirty children from the Filipino and Eritrean communities in Tel Aviv. The children ranged in age from 2 to 14, all of them Hebrew speaking.

The kaytana was directed by five adults: Father David, responsible for the Hebrew speaking communities and the migrants in Israel, Father Roman, responsible for the Hebrew speaking community in Haifa, Sister Claudia from the Jerusalem kehilla, Benedetto, seminarian for the Saint James Vicariate and Kirill, a lay catechist. Present and helping in all logistical questions were the two Filipina sisters who live in the center, Sister Regina and Sister Aurelia, and the administrative assistant of the center, Ms. Bhea.

The day long program included many activities: morning prayer, a religious lesson on the Body of Christ and Bread of Life, an art class that produced a beautiful wall hanging for the center, sport, games, preparation for the Eucharist and daily mass, a shared lunch, a movie and rest time and then time in the portable swimming pools that were installed in the Center’s courtyard.

The last day, the group went on a trip to the Old City of Jaffa. In the port, they heard the story of Jonah and in the Church of Saint Peter, they heard the story of Peter’s vision and his trip to Caesarea and the opening of the mission to all nations.

The camp was a beautiful moment in the life of the migrant communities and we are grateful to all who made this possible, especially to our benefactors at Kirche in Not (Church in Need).
