Gary Anderson, a renowned scholar of Scripture, has been spending the past months in Jerusalem doing research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During this time, he has been attending the Jerusalem kehilla for Sunday mass. He offered to teach a class on the theme of a recent book he published, “Charity, the Place of the Poor in the Biblical Tradition” (Yale University Press, 2013). Anderson speaks modern Hebrew fluently and delivered the class in place of the regular Thursday Bible study. He focused on Biblical texts as well as commentaries of the Rabbis and the Church Fathers. He ended with the reading of a short text from a story written by Israel’s Nobel laureate, S.Y. Agnon.
