Greek Catholic Patriarch resigns


Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Patriarch Gregorios III, head of the Greek Catholic Church on Saturday, May 6, 2017.

The Syrian born Patriarch, named Lutfi Lahham, had been Greek Catholic Archbishop in Jerusalem until he succeeded Patriarch Maximos V in 2000. The Patriarchate will be administered by the Greek Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo Jean-Clement Jean-Bart until the election of a new patriarch by the Synod of Greek Catholic bishops.
