Yom HaShoah in the Jerusalem kehilla

On the eve of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), on Sunday April 23, 2017, the Jerusalem kehilla prayed for the victims, their families and the Jewish people as well as for the Armenian people.

This year, Yom HaShoah and the day to commemorate the genocide of the Armenian people coincide. In the Jerusalem kehilla, at the end of the Sunday mass, Daniel, from the Vicariate community, lit the Shoah candelabrum, a permanent fixture in the Saints Simeon and Anne chapel.

Daniel is the great granddaughter of a Polish Catholic woman who saved the Jewish man who became her husband. The kehillot are home to both Jews, who belong to families who suffered during the Shoah, as well as to Righteous among the Nations and the members of their families.

The candelabrum was given to the Vicariate by the late Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, Archbishop of Milan. It is a small copy of a large sculpture that was presented to Pope John Paul II and to Cardinal Martini by a Jewish organization to honor their contribution to the strengthening of the Jewish-Catholic relationship. The candelabrum was placed at the foot of the altar, alongside the open tomb.
