At the beginning of the school holiday for the Jewish feast of Passover, the Saint James Vicariate organized a children’s camp in order to prepare the children for the celebration of Holy Week and Easter. 19 adult counselors, 11 youth from the Desert Flower youth group and 60 children from the various kehillot participated in the three day camp that was held at the shrine of Our Lady of Palestine in Deir Rafat, alongside Beit Shemesh.

The theme of the camp this year was Pardon, Confession and Resurrection. The religion class discussed the theme of pardon with the children and prepared them for confession. On the second and third days, all the children had the experience of the sacrament of confession, having prepared themselves by writing down their sins on a piece of paper. After the sacrament, the paper was torn to shreds and cast into a bin that was placed at the foot of the cross. On the last day, the lesson focused on receiving pardon from a loving God and pardoning others for what they might have done against us.

Each day the children participated in a variety of activities aside from the religion classes, theater, games, sport and poetry. They also participated in daily morning prayer and mass, had lots of fun times, a film each evening and also times for prayer and quiet. Most of the children were delighted to find the friends they had gotten to know in past camps as the camps bring together children from all over the country and from all parts of the Hebrew speaking Catholic communities.

We are very grateful to the Sisters of Deir Rafat for their warm welcome and to Church in Need for helping to finance this important activity for Hebrew speaking Catholic children. We are also grateful to all the counselors and youth who worked hard to make the camp a great success!
