50 years since Pasolini’s Gospel according to Saint Matthew
Pier Paolo Pasolini released his movie “The Gospel According to Saint Matthew” fifty years ago and on this occasion the Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper, described it as the best film about Jesus.
Pasolini, an atheist and a Communist, made a series of movies on great classics of Western literature. His film rendition of Saint Matthew’s Gospel was faithful to the text of the Gospel and the striking images of the black and white movie raised much controversy at the time.
Fifty years later, the official Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano (edition 23.7.2014), described the film as the best one ever made on Jesus. Pasolini dedicated the film to Pope John XXIII.
