Christmas Novena or what is known as Simbang Gabi to Filipinos is a devotional nine-day series of Masses practiced by Filipinos in anticipation of Christmas and to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Masses are held daily in the early morning hours. This devotion is carried by Filipinos wherever they go.

Here in Jerusalem, the Filipino Chaplaincy started the Simbang Gabi yesterday evening, December 15. Contrary to what is practiced in the Philippines, Masses is at 9 in the evening. This is due to the working hours of the Filipinos living here.

The first night was celebrated by the Chaplain himself, Fr. David Neuhaus. SJ. Despite the cold weather, a good number was present. But it is expected that a bigger number will join during the weekend for most Filipinos have their day-off on Fridays or Saturdays.
