Father Piotr: Interreligious events in the south


Father Piotr, parish priest in Beer Sheba, reports on two interreligious events in Beer Sheba and its environs on November 15 and 16, 2016.

On Tuesday, November 15, the Teachers Training Center in Beer Sheba hosted a panel discussion on the topic: Religions can participate in providing solutions for the conflict in the Middle East. The representatives of Islamic, Jewish (Orthodox and Conservative) and Christian communities from the Inter-religious Council of southern Israel talked to more than one hundred teachers that work in the schools of the Negev. Father Piotr from the Saint Abraham parish explained the Catholic theology of "loving one another as brothers and sisters".

On the following day, November 16, a Muslim high school in Segev Shalom organized "The Day of Tolerance". More than 900 students, divided into small groups had the occasion to meet with Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Druze clergyman from all over the country (Tel Aviv, Nazareth, Haifa, Beer Sheba and other towns in the North) and ask them questions. Rabbis, priests, imams and Druze uqal (religious leaders) explained the topic of tolerance in their religions and answered questions from students and teachers. The culmination point of the event was a common planting of an olive tree called "the Tree of Tolerance" and a panel discussion where the representatives of the city hall and the Ministry of Education were present.
