Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger: from The Promise (4)

We publish here an extract from the book of Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger (1926-2007), Archbishop of Paris, prominent Jewish Catholic. The priests of the Saint James Vicariate meditated his thoughts during their annual retreat in October 2016.

Why have these commandments been given to us?

If we are required to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect, to be holy because God is holy, Jesus himself delivers the key to understanding this interpretation when, in the Sermon on the Mount, he invites us to forgive, to go beyond the law of “an eye for an eye...”: “So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven, for he makes his sun shine on the evil and on the good” (Matthew 5:45). The Law enables us to act as God acts. And in Jesus’ meditation, the Law reveals how God acts. Just as much as the Law is a precept given to man, it is also revelation of God's action and his mystery.
