Among the greatest of the rabbis to hold an official post in the State of Israel, Rabbi Cohen was the son of a distinguished rabbi, Rabbi David Cohen known as the Nazir. He was born in 1927 in Jerusalem.

In 1975, he was appointed Chief Rabbi in Haifa and served as the chairman of the Higher Commission for Dialogue between the Chief Rabbinate and the Holy See and more recently as the chairman of the Commission for Dialogue between Islam and Judaism. He also served as the Chief Rabbinate’s delegate to many interfaith events.

On October 4, 2008, Rabbi Cohen became the first rabbi to address a Synod of Bishops in the Catholic Church.

May his memory be a source of blessing!
