Pope Benedict clarifies position on bishops of St Pius X Society

On Thursday, March 12, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI published a long letter explaining diverse aspects of his lifting of the excommunication of the four bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X.

The letter insisted on the Pope's deep concern for unity but at the same time reaffirmed in the strongest terms his commitment to all aspects of Church teaching, including that of the Second Vatican Council and the post-Conciliar Church.

The Pope thanked the Jews who had helped the Church clarify misunderstandings in the aftermath of the affair and the Pope apologized that the issues involved had not been clearly enough explained to the faithful and to the Church's partners in dialogue.
