Michel de Goedt ocd – may he rest in peace

Father Michel de Goedt OCD, passed away in Lille, France on February 3, 2009 and was buried on February 9. He was 84 years old and suffered from cancer. He is remembered fondly in Israel, especially by the members of the kehillot.

michel_de_goedtFather Michel was born in 1924 and he entered the Carmelites in 1941. He was ordained a priest in 1949. Deeply touched by the mystery of the people of Israel, he was drawn to the Fathers of Sion and lived with them between 1960 to 1962.

In 1969, he came to live in Israel and in 1971 was named responsible for the Hebrew-speaking Catholic community in Jerusalem where he stayed until 1980.

He returned to France where he became provincial of the Carmelites for three years.

Father Michel wrote extensively on Carmelite and Biblical themes but also on different aspects of the relationship of the Church to the Jewish people. In 2005, he was awarded the annual prize of the Jewish-Christian Friendship in France.

May his memory be blessed.
