Meeting of central committee – January 2016

On Friday, January 15, 2016 twenty four members of the central committee of the Vicariate gathered in the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Jerusalem in order to discuss the situation of the kehillot in Israel.

Following the priests' meeting on Friday morning, the other representatives of the kehillot joined the priests at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Jerusalem. All but one of the priests of the Vicariate participated and they were joined by twelve representatives from the various kehillot in Israel: two from Jerusalem, two from Jaffa, three from Latroun, two from Haifa and three from Beer Sheba. Among the representatives were parents of children as well as consecrated men and women.

The discussion focused on the question of identity: Who are the Hebrew speaking Catholic communities in Israel today? After sixty years of existence and with a deep sense of loyalty to the vision of the founders of the kehillot in the 1950s and 60s, we are also called to reflect on how the kehillot have developed over the years. The enormous diversity in members is undoubtedly also a mission that needs to be taken seriously. Whereas, the founders had a very clear vision about what they were setting up, our generation needs to reflect seriously on where we are coming from and who we are right now in order to develop a vision and a pastoral plan for the future.

The meeting was lively and set us on a path along which we will need to continue in future meetings of the Central Committee.
