The ordination mass was presided by His Beatitude Mgr. Fouad Twal, Patriarch of Jerusalem, assisted by Their Excellencies Mgr. Boulos Marcuzzo, Bishop of Nazareth and Mgr. Kamal Bathish, Bishop emeritus. The candidates were presented by Reverend Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Custos of the Holy Land.

Members of all the Hebrew-speaking communities were in the assistance, including over 30 members of the Haifa community, where Roman serves right now, and many more from the Jerusalem community, where Roman lived for a number of years, as well as members from Jaffa and Beer Sheba. The first reading was read in Hebrew by a member of the Jaffa community. All the priests of the Vicariate were among the tens of concelebrants.

The celebration was in Italian and in Latin but Roman responded to the questions posed to him by the Patriarch in Hebrew. When vested in his deacon robes, he, together with Alessandro, began his service as deacon, preparing the altar for the celebration of the Eucharist that followed.

The singing was enthusiastic and accompanied by the magnificent organ of the Church of Saint Savior. There were also well known Christmas carols woven into the songs for the mass.

After the mass, a friendly reception was held in one of the large halls of the Custody of the Holy Land where members of the Hebrew speaking community mingled with Franciscans and their friends and Arab Christians who had come for the prayer. The Babel of languages exuded joy and celebration.

We wish Roman many blessings and the grace to be ever faithful to what he has undertaken today. Mazal tov!
