At the end of last year, the idea was formulated in the Jerusalem kehilla that short trips would be organized to visit the other kehillot in Israel and so we decided to organize a trip to Haifa. When we fixed the date, November 28, 2015, it became clear that on that same day, in Haifa, they were planning to celebrate our sister Stella’s 90th birthday and this filled us with joy.

Instead of simply arriving in Haifa in the evening, for the mass, we thought of exploiting the occasion in order to visit the area. Our brother Eran, from the Haifa kehilla, proposed to ask Father Enrique, head of the Carmelite order in Israel, to accompany us on a visit to the Muhraqa (the place of Elijah’s sacrifice, where he challenged the prophets of Baal in order to bear witness to the truth of the faith in the God of Israel) and to Stella Maris, thought of as the “mother church” of the Carmelite order. Father Enrique spent much time with us and explained to us the spirituality of the Carmelites in simple words full of love.

During the second part of the afternoon, we divided into two groups. One group went to the Haiffa kehilla house in order to participate in Stella birthday celebrations and the other went off with Eran for a walk about in Haifa together with all the children. When the hour drew near for mass, we all gathered in the house of the Haifa kehilla which was packed with people to honor Stella. After the mass, celebrated by Father Roman, the responsible for the Haifa kehilla, we returned to Jerusalem, full of joy after a beautiful and rich day, which we had had the privilege to spend together. Thanks be to God and thank you too to Eran and Father Enrique.
