The Shalom community is installed in Haifa and Isfiyah as well as in Nazareth and works both within the Greek Catholic community (in Haifa) and with the Franciscans in Nazareth. One of the members of the community, Viviane Cerquiera, has been involved in the Hebrew speaking community in Haifa for a number of years. She teaches catechism, visits the sick and helps in the community house.

A few weeks ago the community had a ceremony of renewal of commitment to life according to the community statutes in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. Viviane arrived late and could not participate and so a decision was made that she would renew her commitment within the context of the Sunday mass in Hebrew.

On the second Sunday of Advent, she was called forward by the head of the community, Lorena, who addressed her in Portuguese. Viviane answered in both Portuguese and Hebrew. After the homily, Viviane renewed her commitment in Hebrew and Portuguese. Her fellow community members gave thanks by singing the hymn “Veni Creator” in Latin. She was then blessed by the celebrant, the responsible of the community, Father David SJ.

Viviane was surrounded by seven members of her community and a number of Christian Arab friends of the community. It was indeed a special moment for the Haifa community.
