Roman is back among us

Roman Kaminski, a Polish seminarian, who is studying for the priesthood within the Hebrew-speaking Catholic Vicariate in Israel, has returned to Israel after a year in Italy. We wish him well and we accompany him with our prayers as he proceeds towards ordination, first as a deacon and then as a priest. He wrote us a few words on his experience abroad. Barukh hahozer (Blessed is the one who returns)!

Last year I spent in Italy in a parish which is situated on the periphery of Rome. The major task with which I was entrusted was teaching catechism to young people. I had two groups of those preparing for confirmation and a group of those who wanted to continue their spiritual experience even after receiving the sacrament of initiation into Christian adulthood.

Alongside this, I was able to be an acolyte during liturgical services as well as taking communion to the sick and the elderly. I also had the occasion to get to know different ecclesial realities like the group for the Renewal of the Spirit (charismatics), the Neo-Catechumenate and Communion and Liberation. Thus I was able to help in different activities within the parish: the liturgy group, catechesis on the Bible and other parish initiatives.

Of course I also had the opportunity to visit Rome and was even able to participate in an audience with the Holy Father, reserved for the Roman clergy.

At the end of my stay in Italy, my friends asked whether I was happy to be leaving Rome. A little embarrassed, because I did not want to hurt their feelings, I reassured them that I had been very happy among them but I explained that my heart and my thoughts were always where my home is, that is in the midst of the Israeli people. And now here I am, delighted to find myself once again in the kehilla!
